What is wood and MDF laser cutting?

Cutting and engraving wood-based sheet materials with a laser that follows your design file. It produces detailed shapes without cutting tools, with a characteristic darkened edge.

Who is it for?

Sign makers, retailers, product makers, model makers, event companies, educators and individuals who need wooden parts or engraved wooden items.

Which wood materials can you cut?

Natural wood, plywood and MDF. Plywood should be a laser-suitable grade, because the glue between layers affects cut quality. Thicknesses are confirmed for each job.

What applications are supported?

Signage and plaques, templates and stencils, displays and point-of-sale, packaging inserts, models and kits, and engraved products.

Do you accept one-off projects?

Yes. We welcome one-off pieces and prototypes as well as larger orders.

Are bulk orders available?

Yes. We take on batch and repeat production. Tell us the quantity and how often you expect to reorder, and we will quote accordingly.

Can I supply my own wood or MDF?

Yes. Tell us the exact board or timber, its thickness and any paint, coating or laminate, and we’ll confirm the best approach. See Customer-Supplied Materials.

Which artwork formats do you accept?

For cutting, we need vector artwork: SVG, DXF, PDF or AI files drawn at 1:1 scale in millimetres. PNG and JPG files are suitable for engraving photographs and raster images, or as a reference if you need help preparing artwork.

How is wood and MDF cutting priced?

Every job is quoted individually. The price depends on the material and its thickness, the size of the parts, the quantity, the complexity of the design (which affects machine time), any engraving and delivery. See Quotation & Payment Terms.

How do I request a quotation?

Use our quote request form to send your requirements, quantities and artwork files. We review every enquiry and reply with a tailored quotation or any questions we have.

Working with wood

Natural materials, cut and engraved to your design

Wood-based materials are versatile and cost-effective, and they take engraving well. The laser darkens cut edges and engraved areas, which gives wooden pieces their distinctive finish.

Plywood is strong and light, so it suits components, models and structural pieces. MDF has a smooth, even surface for templates, displays and parts that will be painted. Natural wood brings grain and character to engraved products, signage and gifts.

Because wood is natural, colour and grain vary from sheet to sheet. We’ll talk this through when you order matching batches.

  • Engraving contrastEngraved areas darken against the surface for clear, readable marking.
  • Natural variationGrain and colour differ between sheets, especially in natural timber.
  • Ready for finishingMDF parts can be painted or finished after cutting.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is MDF suitable for laser cutting?

Yes. MDF cuts cleanly and has a smooth surface for engraving and painting. Cut edges are darkened by the laser.

What type of plywood should I use?

Laser-grade plywood gives the cleanest cut, because the glue between its layers is designed for laser work. If you supply your own, tell us the exact product.

Why are laser-cut wood edges dark?

The laser cuts by heat, which darkens the edge of wood and MDF. Many customers like this look. If it matters for your project, tell us and we’ll advise.

Can you engrave photos onto wood?

Wood can be engraved with images. Results depend on the photo and the timber, so we recommend a sample before a larger order.

Will a batch of wooden products match exactly?

Cut shapes will be consistent, but natural wood varies in colour and grain. Plywood and MDF are more uniform than solid timber.

Can you cut painted or coated boards?

Tell us exactly what the board is and how it is finished, and we’ll confirm the best approach for your project.
