Laser cutting: the key facts

Precision Cutworks cuts parts, shapes and components from acrylic, wood, plywood, MDF and selected plastics, working from customers’ vector design files. We take on one-off pieces, prototypes, batches and repeat production for businesses and individuals across the UK. Every job is quoted individually.

What is precision laser cutting?

A focused laser beam follows the lines in your vector design to cut through sheet material. Because the cut is driven by a digital file rather than a cutting tool, detailed shapes can be produced and repeated consistently without tooling costs.

Who is it for?

Businesses, designers, sign makers, manufacturers, makers and individuals who need parts, shapes, lettering or components cut to their own design.

Which materials can be cut?

Acrylic (including mirror acrylic), wood, plywood, MDF and selected plastics. See Materials & Capabilities.

What can laser cutting be used for?

Components and parts, sign lettering and panels, display and point-of-sale pieces, templates, packaging inserts, models, prototypes and decorative items.

Do you accept one-off projects?

Yes. We welcome one-off pieces and prototypes as well as larger orders. Any minimum order charge will be shown on your quotation.

Are bulk orders available?

Yes. We take on batch and repeat production. Tell us the quantity and how often you expect to reorder, and we will quote accordingly.

Can I supply my own material?

Often, yes. Tell us exactly what the material is and its thickness, and we’ll confirm it’s right for your project before we start. See Customer-Supplied Materials.

Which artwork formats do you accept?

For cutting, we need vector artwork: SVG, DXF, PDF or AI files drawn at 1:1 scale in millimetres. PNG and JPG files are suitable for engraving photographs and raster images, or as a reference if you need help preparing artwork.

How is laser cutting priced?

Every job is quoted individually. The price depends on the material and its thickness, the size of the parts, the quantity, the complexity of the design (which affects machine time), any engraving, any artwork preparation, and delivery. See Quotation & Payment Terms.

How do I request a quotation?

Use our quote request form to send your requirements, quantities and artwork files. We review every enquiry and reply with a tailored quotation or any questions we have.

How it works

Cut from your file, repeated consistently

Laser cutting turns a digital drawing into finished parts. We check your file, plan how the parts sit on the sheet to use material efficiently, and cut each part along the paths in your design.

Because there are no cutting tools or dies to make, laser cutting suits both single pieces and larger quantities. Once a file has been approved, the same design can be cut again for repeat orders.

Cutting and engraving can be combined in one job. For example, a part can be cut to shape with a logo, reference number or markings engraved on its surface.

  • No tooling requiredYour design file is all that is needed to start.
  • Fine detailSuited to intricate shapes, small holes and lettering.
  • RepeatableApproved files can be reused for consistent repeat orders.
  • Cut and engrave togetherAdd logos, text or markings in the same job.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is laser cutting?

Laser cutting is well suited to detailed, repeatable parts. The accuracy you can expect depends on the material, its thickness and your design. If parts need to fit together or meet a tolerance, include this in your enquiry and we’ll advise before you order.

What is the largest part you can cut?

Part sizes depend on the material and the sheet sizes available. Send us your dimensions and we will confirm the options. Larger designs can often be made in sections.

How thick a material can you cut?

This depends on the material. Send us the material type and thickness you need, and we’ll confirm whether it can be cut cleanly.

Can you cut and engrave the same part?

Yes. Mark the cutting and engraving in your file using separate colours or layers and tell us which is which.

Will laser-cut edges need finishing?

Laser-cut acrylic usually has a smooth, glossy edge. Wood, plywood and MDF edges are darkened by the cutting process. If edge appearance matters for your project, tell us and we’ll advise.
